Moonstone: The Complete Guide
Moon Sutras
There are crystals that are beautiful. And then there are crystals that feel like they were made specifically for you, for this moment, for exactly what you're carrying right now. Moonstone is the second kind. It's the stone we built Moon Sutras around, and the more you understand it, the more sense that makes.
What is Moonstone?
Moonstone is a feldspar mineral known for a phenomenon called adularescence, that soft billowing glow that seems to move beneath the surface like light caught under water. No two stones carry it in exactly the same way.
It's found primarily in Sri Lanka, India and Madagascar. In India it's been considered sacred for thousands of years, believed to be solidified moonlight. In ancient Rome it was associated with Diana, goddess of the moon. Across cultures and centuries, moonstone has always carried the same meaning: the moon, the emotional, the intuitive, the cyclic nature of all things.
Moonstone in Vedic astrology
In Vedic astrology the Moon governs the mind, Manas in Sanskrit, which encompasses not just the intellect but the entire field of inner experience. Your thoughts, your emotional reactions, your instinctive responses, your relationship with your own inner world. All of it is Moon.
A strong Moon in a birth chart produces emotional intelligence, intuition and a rich inner life. A challenged Moon produces anxiety, emotional volatility and a mind that won't be still.
Moonstone is the gemstone of the Moon in Vedic tradition. Wearing it strengthens and supports the Moon's energy in your chart, which means supporting the mind, the emotions, and your capacity to feel without being overwhelmed by feeling. This is why moonstone isn't just a pretty crystal. In Vedic astrology it's a tool for working with the most fundamental aspects of your inner life.

What Moonstone actually does
People describe working with moonstone in a few consistent ways. A quieter mind. A greater capacity to feel emotions without being swamped by them. A softer relationship with uncertainty. An increase in intuitive clarity, the kind of knowing that comes not from analysis but from somewhere deeper.
It works primarily on the crown chakra, the energy centre associated with awareness and consciousness. What moonstone does consistently across different people and different contexts is create emotional steadiness. Not numbness, not detachment, but steadiness. The difference between being tossed around by a wave and learning to move with it.
For anyone whose mind runs fast, whose emotions run high, whose nervous system is frequently overwhelmed by the pace of modern life, that steadiness is not a small thing. It's everything.

Who should wear Moonstone
In Vedic astrology moonstone is most recommended for Cancer ascendants and Cancer moon signs. But at Moon Sutras our approach has always been intention over prescription. Moonstone is for anyone who:
- Feels emotionally overwhelmed or reactive
- Struggles with anxiety, particularly the kind that lives in the body
- Is going through a period of change or uncertainty
- Wants to develop their intuition and inner knowing
- Is navigating grief, heartbreak or loss
- Wants to feel more settled, more themselves
It's also particularly powerful at new beginnings. A new job, a new relationship, a new chapter. The Moon is cyclical. It ends and begins again every month without fail. Moonstone carries that energy.

How to use Moonstone
Wear it daily. The most effective way to work with any crystal is consistent contact over time. Wear it and let it do its work quietly in the background of your day.
Work with it during moon phases. On the new moon hold your moonstone and set your intention. On the full moon hold it and consciously release what's no longer serving you.
Use it in meditation. Hold your moonstone in both hands or place it on your crown chakra. It has a remarkable ability to quiet mental noise and deepen the meditative state.
Keep it close at night. If anxiety or overthinking disturbs your sleep, keep moonstone on your bedside table. It works gently during the night hours when the Moon's influence is naturally strongest.
How to cleanse Moonstone
Moonlight is the most natural and effective method. Place your moonstone on a windowsill overnight during the full moon.
Sage or incense smoke works well for a quick cleanse between moon cycles.
Selenite placed alongside your moonstone will continuously cleanse and charge it.
Do not use water on polished pieces or jewellery settings as it can cause damage over time.
